Even fictional people need to live somewhere, and creating interesting characters often requires artists to design equally interesting dwellings. If recent films are any indication, modern filmmakers have taken this principle to heart. Here are 10 of the best movie homes of 2013:
1. The Fortress of Solitude

No Superman movie would be complete without the hero’s frozen Fortress of Solitude. Warner Bros.’ upcoming reboot Man of Steel has redesigned the fortress as a spacecraft sent by Superman’s father to inform him of his Kryptonian origins.
2. Tony Stark’s Mansion

Tony Stark’s ultramodern Malibu mansion shows what one can do with an eye for architectural design and a few billion dollars. What better place to store a collection of expensive cars and deadly robotic exoskeletons? Unfortunately, the artistic elegance of Stark’s home is compromised in Iron Man 3 when much of it is obliterated by a swarm of attack helicopters.
3. The Evil Dead Cabin

If you can ignore the stench of death and the malevolent demonic forces, the cabin in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead remake is actually quite cozy. Just be sure to keep a shotgun and chainsaw on your person at all times.
4. Gru’s New Home

The Despicable Me franchise will return to theatres this summer with a sequel. This time, the supervillain and his minions have retired from their life of crime to a lovely house in a pleasant suburban neighborhood.
5. China Girl’s Teapot

China Girl is an unexpected scene stealer in Oz the Great and Powerful, and the smoking ruins of her town are one of the most powerful images in the movie. The porcelain buildings may have taken a beating, but China Girl’s tiny teapot house still looks like an adorable place to live.
6. The Sawyer House

The protagonist in Texas Chainsaw 3D is Heather Miller, a woman travelling to a rural area in Texas to inherit the estate of a family she didn’t know she had. Unfortunately, one of her relatives turns out to be everybody’s favorite masked psychopath. Leatherface proceeds to terrorize his cousin with his signature chainsaw.
7. The Cloister Castle

If you’re trying to keep out rampaging giants, the Kingdom of Cloister’s castle is not a bad place to live. Some of the most epic scenes in Jack the Giant Slayer take place in this imposing fortress far below the towering bean stalks. Amenities include a moat and plenty of flaming oil to go with it.
8. The Candy House

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters begins with a nod to the source material as the protagonists are lured into a gingerbread house by a cannibalistic witch. Before she can turn them into a meal, the children give the hag a taste of her own medicine by burning her alive.
9. Mama‘s Cabin

Thanks to outstanding child actors and special effects, Mama may well be the most terrifying movie of 2013. Many of the scares take place in a decaying cabin, and the structure is carefully designed to create an atmosphere of pure evil.
10. The Croods’ Cave

The Croods are a family of Neanderthals whose journey begins when their cave is destroyed by an earthquake. The adventure that follows is a fight for survival as the family searches their changing world for a new place to call home.
